Hurt and Succour

52 Lessons with Finn by Margaret Spencer is an easy-paced, and profound account of three individuals. The book revolves around a family of three individuals. The mother is worried, her daughter Lola, a 13-year-old brooding and rebellious teenager lacks direction in life. Finn, the grandfather, agrees to give Lola, his granddaughter a perspective on life. Finn uniquely does this. Finn uses a deck of 52 cards. Finn in his meetings with Lola, would use a card to set Lola thinking about some aspect of life. Lola realizes the subtleties, hard truths, happy moments, successes, and failures a life is all about. Lola armed with the lessons her grandfather gave, grows into a confident woman, educated, aware, and eager to achieve. Life goes on, and Finn is graceful in advancing years. The mother is happy for Lola. Lola is flourishing in her career. There is however a hint of sadness in the three individuals. What is it that has been gnawing at them over the years? Finn misses but has happy memories of his wife Mette. Lola wonders and hides her hurt. The mother is ridden with guilt.

I will not be a spoiler. I will suggest readers to read the book.

This is a story of relationships that are stormy, unanswered questions, and human to the core. A book that could be a ”Ready Reckoner” for us. If in a quandary, Finn with his 52 lessons could offer us a different perception.
