The Recovering Materialist by Tomas Makinen is a simple, candid, and no-holds-barred narration of a life that is challenged by society demanding conformity, shocked and alarmed if the norms of patriotism are not obeyed, not walk the beaten track which leads nowhere.
Tomas dares to think outside the box and breaks the hearts of the loved ones. Invites the ire of the administration by not opting for army duty. Tomas hustles through from being a hardcore punk music fan to not being an ideal partner for his girlfriend. The universe often presents a new situation or someone who nudges you in the appropriate path. Tomas’s search for that unknown takes him to spirituality. Every situation brings in a new set of realities. The struggles to adapt to selfless service. The loneliness of being confined in a hut, reciting mantras, or meditating and the doubts that creep in about “ Is this I wanted to do?”
Tomas goes through this plethora of emotions till the worm turns. Tomas finds relative peace in his spirituality. Tomas’s parents accept Tomas as he is in his quest to be happy. They say a journey is important not the destination, but every destination offers you the choice of further journeys. Tomas had a choice too.
The Recovering Materialist is our story. Most readers would as I did, feel that déjà vu of being there and done that.
I would recommend seekers read this narration of being fragile and that not all decisions are etched in rock. Life moves on as Tomas did with a new awareness.
