Did I play God ?

I saw a large web spun by a spider in my backyard garden. I marveled at the silkiness and near invisibility of it. I decided, as I usually do, let the micro wildlife in my garden play out its part. It was not long before that web of deceit claimed its victim. A bee got entangled in the net. The bee’s struggle to free itself was in vain.

Gradually the bee gave up and was reconciled to being food for the spider. The spider was nowhere to be seen but it must have been lurking somewhere. I felt sorry for the bee. I broke the web down with a stick setting the bee free.

The food chain is an integral part of our lives. Did I just disrupt that food chain? Did I play god? Was I being selfish? I know how important bees are for pollinating my garden. They say bees are a vanishing breed on this planet. This does not augur well for our food production. Did I just contribute with my rescue deed? If the spider could speak my language it would have castigated me for my rescue act and destroying its net because it would have trapped invading pest that devour and infect plants in my garden.

Point taken, but would I do it again? I am not sure.

What is your opinion?

Word of the day is Boycott: Withdrawal from social or commercial relations in the form of protest. Did you know the word took its form of a verb from a Charles Boycott in the 1880″s who refused to lower the rent for his tenants, and farmers, and his bid to evict them led to a campaign of ostracism and isolation?

While saving the bee upholds empathy, it disrupts the natural balance.
Your dilemma echoes the intricate interdependence of life.
