SHADES OF DEMOCRACY

Towards a Model of Constitutions by William Kuttikadan is a book of civic studies. The author has researched aspects of democracies evolving from a basic to a mature level. It is essentially a graphical guide to how democracies can construct their constitution to a structure that serves the people effectively. The diagrams and flow charts require focus, and some understanding as the author takes us through so many possibilities of serving the people, the main stakeholders of a country. Could there be a utopian democracy?  The realities are different. William Kuttikudan highlights the fact that every positive change could face an “ evolutionary Cul-De-Sac”. The author then suggests a gamut of safeguards, legislations, and regulations that separate power from the rule of law. How can we keep cliques and lobby groups with vested interests at bay, who would attempt to control all decision-making of a government?

A student of constitutional matters, the progression of democracies, and the implementation of legislation will enjoy reading this book. A book that educates us on effective governance. I enjoyed the relevance of this book because there are various shades of democracies functioning on this planet. The definitions of democracy are different in countries. The spectrum would vary from orchestrated, quasi, and electoral to fairly democratic countries. The ideal as the author suggests having an evolving democracy.

I would recommend readers to read this knowledge enhancing book.

Word of the day: Despotism is the exercise of absolute power.
